International Mother Language Day was approved by the 1999 UNESCO General Conference at the initiative of Bangladesh and is now observed throughout the world.
UNESCO is highlighting the role of young people in shaping the future of multilingual education for this year’s observance. Youth voices on multilingual education emphasizes that language is more than a means of communication: it is central to identity, learning, well-being and participation in society.
