These days, like everyone else, I spend a lot of time on social media. It has become a habit to check Facebook or Instagram on and off, day and night. Sometimes, out of habit, I mindlessly scroll through my phone screen even though I know there's nothing interesting. However, last week, while doing that, my eyes landed on a photo with a very interesting message.

Yes, it was the image of Chandra Arya! A federal parliamentarian representing the Nepean constituency. And his message? A dream! A commitment! And a strong determination that defines the core of the career of every politician!

On January 9, 2025, Arya announced his leadership bid for the Liberal Party of Canada! He declared: “I am running to be the next Prime Minister of Canada to lead a small, more efficient government to rebuild our nation and secure prosperity for future generations”.

Like many of us, Chandra Arya is a south Asian immigrant! He immigrated from Karnataka, India to Canada in 2006. After working for different companies and institutions, he entered Canadian politics. The following is his self-introduction:
“In Canada, I started as an investment advisor in a bank. Before entering politics, I spent six years as an executive at a small high-tech defence technology company. I volunteered with many organizations, including serving as a board member of an affordable housing corporation and on the board of invest Ottawa, the City of Ottawa’s economic development agency”.

He was first elected as a federal MP in 2015 to represent the riding of Nepean and was re-elected in 2019 and 2021. Arya is a renowned political man in our society! I met him several times at events organized by the Bangladeshi community. He is helpful and friendly. I have witnessed his contributions to our Bangladeshi community. A notable example of this is his successful organizing the Bangladesh Day celebration on Parliament Hill in 2023.  The following open invitation shows his commitment to inclusiveness: 
“I am pleased to invite you to celebrate Bangladesh Day on Parliament Hill. The event is to celebrate Bangladeshi culture and heritage as a part of Canadian multicultural fabric and the contributions of Bangladeshi Canadians to socio-economic development of our country.” He is a tireless promoter of South Asian culture in the multicultural mosaic of Canada!

Chandra Arya is a very active and passionate parliamentarian. He is passionate about contributing to his constituency. He cares about ethnic and minority groups. He has taken a strong stance against monarchism and has been a vocal supporter of an Independent Palestine. His activities and commitments demonstrate that he is ready for leadership. From his recent interviews and his leadership manifesto, we can clearly see his vision for Canada!

Arya's leadership bid is characterized by a commitment to significant reforms and a pragmatic approach to Canada's pressing issues. A big one is transitioning Canada to a Republic! He advocates for replacing the monarchy with a Canadian head of state, aiming to grant Canada full sovereignty over its affairs. Arya emphasizes the need for decisive leadership to tackle Canada's structural challenges, focusing on rebuilding the economy, creating equal opportunities, and ensuring prosperity for future generations.

As immigrants, we are often busy securing ourselves and our families. However, some of us can overcome these challenges and join politics to provide public service. Chandra Arya is one of them. He thinks big and aims high. By becoming the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, he can fulfil our collective dream. This is the time for us to promote a hard-working, optimistic, and a dynamic South Asian.

So, please join the Liberal Party of Canada to elect Chandra Arya as the Leader and the next Prime Minister of Canada.
